Featured Herb: Bupleurum

When you’re hot, it’s not hot flashes.  The dreaded symptom of menopause.  For a generation of American women, estrogen replacement therapy or nothing have been the range of choices.  Either get relief now and suffer the consequences later in the form of increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure or tough it out for 2, 3, 5 maybe even 10 years.

But now, the best-kept 2,000-year-old secret of the Orient is finally being told in the West.  Chinese herbs such as bupleurum have been used by Asian women for thousands of years to prevent or alleviate menopausal symptoms- with hot flashes at the top of the complaint list.

Reams of research have been published over the past decade on the anti-fever properties of bupleurum and its active ingredients.  New York physician, herbalist, and acupuncturist Qing-cai Zhang obtained good results with a bupleurum-based formula used to treat the menopausal symptoms of low-grade fever, anxiety, irritability, night sweats, fatigue, and insomnia.  Zhang employed other bupleurum formulas to treat irregular menstruation, restlessness, nervousness, depression, and influenza-like body aches.  All four formulas also contained tang-kuei, as does Menixx – since these two herbs reinforce each other.

American researcher Daniel L. Klayman, in an article published in Science magazine, reported on the anti-fever properties of bupleurum; while Drs. Chang and Yeung of the University of Hong Kong have extensively studied bupleurum’s effectiveness in treating the menopausal complaints of fatigue, hot flashes, body aches, and irritability.

Modern research is confirming what Chinese practitioners have known for two millennia: bupleurum can calm you down when you’re hot under the collar and cool you down when your whole body is flashing.
